Pat Thomas received his artistic training from his father, reknowned Delta bluesman James "Son" Thomas, a gravedigger who often fashioned skulls from clay and human teeth. Pat Thomas' favorite motifs involve clay or marker catheads and "African heads." Drawing from his deep well of artistic heritage as well as new techniques and styles created in the moment, Thomas's energy and reverence permeate each of his pieces. Like his visual art, Thomas' music embodies classic modes and an undeniable contemporary energy.
