"I call it junk, until someone leaves with it. Then I call it merchandise," says yard installation artist Larry Grimes. Grimes served as a guard at Parchman Penitentiary for 25 years. Today he lives just north of the prison on Highway 49, on a self-styled compound at which he creates his art. Using rusty tools, discarded gas tanks, wooden odds and ends and a welding rod, Grimes tends to create human figures and toy vehicles reminiscent of his Delta childhood, when he fashioned a favorite toy from an old tire and a stick.
